The Business & Marketing Programme gives international students and volunteers genuine responsibility inside a working, self-sustaining NGO in Tanzania — one that funds its own mission through safari operations and the sale of environmentally friendly products. Work spans two tracks: marketing and communications, and NGO management and development. It is run by Art in Tanzania (AIT), a community-development NGO founded in 1996.

Where? Around Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, within AIT's working organisation.

How long? Flexible — the programme runs continuously year-round, with duration adjustable to your academic schedule and goals.

Working hours? 6–8 hours per day, Monday to Friday.

Who joins? AIT typically hosts 15–40 international students at a time, drawn from over 1000 partner universities worldwide.

What does the Business & Marketing Programme involve?

The programme spans two interconnected tracks, which you can focus on or combine based on your background and goals.

Marketing & communications

• Digital marketing — managing and growing AIT's online presence, including content strategy, copywriting, and campaign execution.
• SEO and web development — contributing to website improvements, optimising content for search, and supporting digital visibility goals.
• Social media management — creating and publishing content across AIT's channels, including a Facebook audience of over 50,000 followers.
• Programme promotion — developing materials and campaigns to market volunteer placements, internships, safaris, and tours to an international audience.

NGO management & development

• Organisational management support — assisting with the day-to-day management and strategic development of a working NGO.
• Staff training — designing and delivering training sessions, from digital literacy to sustainability practices.
• Community entrepreneurship — supporting grassroots business development in the communities AIT serves.
• Network development — building and maintaining organisational partnerships, critical where collaboration compensates for limited capacity.
• Sustainability advocacy — raising awareness about environmental and social sustainability across the organisation and its programmes.

What will I learn?

The programme bridges academic training and real-world application. You leave with a working understanding of how marketing, management, and business development function in a developing-country context — where creativity, adaptability, and collaboration matter as much as technical skill — plus a first-hand perspective on the opportunities in one of Africa's fastest-growing economies. You also gain cross-cultural collaboration experience that employers increasingly value.

How does the placement work?

Academic-level team leaders supervise your placement daily, and a weekly plan-and-report system keeps your work structured, purposeful, and aligned with your study programme. Your placement is fully tailored to your background, experience, and interests. Business, marketing, communications, management, economics, and entrepreneurship are all a strong fit — but innovative thinkers from any discipline are welcome.

Art in Tanzania (AIT) has placed approximately 250 participants annually in community-based programmes across Tanzania since 1996. It is a working, self-sustaining organisation, not a simulation — you are part of making it work.
