Human Rights Program — Art in Tanzania
Rights are only as strong as the people who defend them.
In Tanzania, human rights work is not abstract — it is urgent, local, and deeply personal. Children are denied protection. Women face systemic gender-based violence. People with disabilities are excluded from the spaces and decisions that shape their lives. Sexual and reproductive rights remain contested and under-resourced.
This program is the task that needs to be done. And it needs people like you.
About the Program
Since 1996, Art in Tanzania has placed approximately 250 participants annually in hands-on community programmes across Tanzania. The Human Rights Program connects you with a network of Tanzanian legal professionals, NGO practitioners, and rights advocates — giving you real exposure to how human rights work is conducted on the ground in a developing-country context.
This program is not an observation. You will be part of the team.
Focus Areas
The program centres on two primary pillars, with room to develop a specialised focus based on your academic background or research interests:
⚖️ Gender Equality & Women's Rights Work alongside Tanzanian lawyers and advocates to promote women's rights and combat gender-based violence. This experience includes community education, legal awareness campaigns, survivor support initiatives, and policy advocacy.
🧒 Child Protection & Children's Rights Collaborate with local Tanzanian NGOs — including partners within a consortium supported by UNICEF, Save the Children, and others — to advance children's rights in education, protection, and welfare. This programme was developed and is chaired by the Tanzanian Ministry of Community Development, Gender, and Children.
Additional Focus Areas — depending on your background and interests, placements may also include:
- Sexual and reproductive rights
- Rights of people with disabilities
- Legal research and documentation
- Thesis or academic research support
How You'll Work
Human rights work demands sensitivity, cultural awareness, and collaboration. You will be embedded in a team of private Tanzanian citizens — lawyers, advocates, and community members — alongside fellow international interns and volunteers.
Your day-to-day work will include:
- Advocacy activities in communities and schools
- Attending and contributing to seminars and forums
- Teaching and awareness-raising sessions
- Networking with local and international rights organisations
- Planning, reporting, and visibility work
- Field documentation and research
We also leverage our social media platforms — including a Facebook audience of over 50,000 followers — as active advocacy channels. Your work can amplify far beyond the communities you serve directly.
Research & Thesis Option
Students looking to fulfil academic research requirements are welcome to develop a thesis or research focus within this programme. Placements can be shaped around your topic and methodology, with support from our in-country team and partner organisations.
How It Works
Hours: 6–8 hours per day, Monday to Friday. Start date: Flexible — the programme runs continuously year-round. Duration: Adjustable to your academic schedule and goals. Group size: 15–40 international students at any time, drawn from 400+ partner universities worldwide
Your placement is tailored to your academic background, professional experience, and personal interests. Law, political science, social work, international development, gender studies, public health, and related fields are all well-suited to this programme.
