JSTOR, an independent not-for-profit organization located in New York, NY, is a large-scale undertaking to build an electronic archive of scholarly journals and to improve dramatically access to this material. To date, JSTOR has converted over 9 million pages from 242 journal titles from print to digital form. In all of its activities, JSTOR promotes a system-wide perspective, balancing the needs of publishers, libraries and scholars. Presently, more than 170 publishers and nearly 1,400 academic libraries worldwide have signed on as participants in this endeavor.
