The Department of Teacher Preparation and Special Education at the George Washington University produces teachers for the D.C. Metropolitan Area. Through partnerships with local area school systems, as well as federal and foundation support the department offers scholarships and stipends for arts and sciences majors who wish to pursue teacher certification/licensure at the graduate level while working in public schools. The Graduate School of Education has been rated in the top 20% of graduate schools of education for the11th consecutive year is fifth in the country in research dollars per faculty member (U.S. News & World Report, 2010). Several recent grants awarded by the USDOE and other funding secured by the university provides a continnuum of alternatives for students seeking teaching seeking credentials. Programs include a newly funded opportunity to work with children with disabilities in the age range of 0-8 and other unique initiatives include an advanced program focused on on line learning.
