MISSION STATEMENT

SBC will ensure the conservation of spectacled bears in the threatened dry forest ecosystem of northern Peru. SBC will achieve this through scientific research, education and working collaboratively with private land owners and rural communities to improve their social and economic well being.

OVERVIEW

SBC is a non-profit organization registered in Canada and Peru with a mandate to tackle the complex social, economic and environmental problems that threaten the survival of the spectacled (Andean) bear and other species that inhabit the unique and endangered habitat in northern Peru.

This region of Peru includes some of the most endangered tropical dry forest habitat on the planet with over 60 endemic bird species, rare mammals such as the ocelot cat, anteater and many endangered plants such as the sapote tree (Colicodendron scabridum), a vital resource for the spectacled bear. All are struggling to adapt to climate change and its destruction by human overpopulation.

We combine Science with Community Outreach and Education by working with local inhabitants to understand the resources vital for spectacled bears and other inhabitants of the tropical dry forest. We raise awareness through education at all levels and collaborate with local and regional governments to develop realistic conservation management plans that meet the needs of both the local communities and the endangered Spectacled Bear.
