School of History and Sociology-Georgia Institute of Technology

The School of History and Sociology (HSOC) offers interdisciplinary M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs. Housed in one of the top ten public research universities in the United States, the HSOC graduate program admits a small number of M.S. and Ph.D. students each year. Because of the small size of the program, students have many opportunities to be involved in research including through collaborations with faculty and most students have opportunities to publish scholarly papers. With faculty expertise across a range of subject areas, students have flexibility in developing a wide range of research agendas. In addition, many students have taken advantage of opportunities to collaborate with faculty in the Schools of Public Policy, International Affairs, Urban Planning, Economics, and Literature, Media, and Communications. Full-time Ph.D. students receive a tuition waiver, stipend, and other funding opportunities to support their research programs. 

Located in the heart of Atlanta, admitted students live in vibrant and culturally diverse neighborhoods. Students benefit from opportunities to build partnerships or work in internships with Atlanta’s prominent corporations, non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, and museums. Tech’s proximity to Emory University, Georgia State, and the Atlanta University Center provides opportunities for collaboration and community building between universities. Many graduates have made careers as college faculty in history, sociology, or an area of science and technology studies. Others have leveraged their interdisciplinary knowledge and skills outside the academy in think tanks, public agencies, and private businesses.  We hope you will join us.
