    Founded during the American Civil War, the 400 acre Woodlawn Cemetery serves as the final resting place for over 300,000 individuals including such renowned Americans as author Herman Melville, women’s rights activist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, jazz great Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington, dime store magnate F.W. Woolworth and Celia Cruz, the “Queen of Salsa.” Among the notable artisans that created the memorials at Woodlawn are: McKim Mead & White, Alexander Archipenko, Daniel Chester French, John Russell Pope, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Samuel Yellin and Sir Edwin Lutyens.
