Alison Bixby Stone School

Alison Bixby Stone School is a not-for-profit bilingual school offering instruction to students in grades pre-k through 8. We are a model school with a social mission to provide a challenging and interactive bilingual education for children from all walks of life.

Our mission is to provide children of diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, a stimulating and challenging educational environment that fosters intellectual, social and emotional growth, while instilling an awareness of environmental responsibility and the understanding that learning is a life-long process that is both meaningful and enjoyable.

Despite recent political issues Honduras, and especially Zamorano, which is located 30 kilometers outside of the capital,Tegucigalpa, is a safe and beautiful place to work. ABSS is on the campus of "La Escuela Agricola Panamericana" which is an agricultural college dedicated to environmental protection and sustainable agricultural practices. Forty percent of the students at ABSS come from rural families with very limited resources and receive financial assistance. We also provide training for Honduran public school teachers and for other non-profit schools in Honduras. We do not use text books. Therefore our curriculum is dynamic in that teachers work together to develop integrated, student-centered units in each subject area. A class size limit of 18 enables teachers to successfully differentiate instruction and implement many research-based teaching techniques. ABSS was recently accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and received commendations for being a model of social justice. Ex-pat teachers invariably say their experience at ABSS is unique and extremely rewarding.
