The Peter Spencer Family Life Foundation (PSFLF) was incorporated in December, 1999. The mission of the PSFLF is to develop healthy individuals and communities through programs that stimulate and create positive self-esteem, self-concept and personal growth opportunities. The vision of the PSFLF is to become a center for cultural activities and programs that reinforce a sense of belonging and pride within the African American community for youth, and their families. The PSFLF is the 509 (a) (1) arm of The Mother African Union Church (which has been a part of the Wilmington community for over 200 years), and is devoted to the principles of Peter Spencer who established the first independent Black Church in 1813; and those principles are “hope, salvation, community, liberation and self-determination.” Of particular significance to the PSFLF is its work with young people, because they are foundational to the principles of Spencer.

The PSFLF is a resource to the community that offers innovative programs that pivot on the theme of building pride, self-concept, and self-esteem, both in the community and individually. As such, we have a goal of academic excellence in all our children’s and educational programs. Programs include: 1) Two Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools; 2) An Afterschool Program, Ujimma Afterschool Enrichment Program. This program has been in existence for approximately 20 years.
