Andrea Henderson Memorial Fund, Inc.

The Andrea Henderson Memorial Fund is dedicated to community, activity, and fun. We support the fight against cancer in honor of a departed friend, Andrea Henderson, and keep her memory alive with a weekend-long celebration of the ways she impacted our lives as students and young adults.

In October of 2009, Andrea "Froggy" Henderson was diagnosed with breast cancer. A brief nine months later, she passed away, leaving countless friends, co-workers, students, and extended family in utter disbelief that "Froggy" would no longer be a part of their lives. She was a truly special woman who spent more than 30 years shaping creative minds as an art teacher at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland, encouraging young people to flourish into adulthood by developing their sense of self. Mrs. Henderson was a second mother to many, and as such we, her "extended family," carry on in her name in order to honor the memory of our "Froggy."

In April 2010, the Andrea Henderson Memorial Fund was organized by a small group of alumni from the ice hockey team at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, of which "Froggy" was the faculty sponsor from 1998 through 2009. Incorporated in January 2011 and recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation, our mission is to raise funding for the education, research, and treatment of cancer.

The Andrea Henderson Memorial Fund raises funds for the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins. Our primary means of raising funds is through Leap Towards A Cure, an annual charity hockey tournament and community festival held in Laurel, MD on the first weekend in August. Leap Towards A Cure is free to the public, with all proceeds coming from team registration fees, a silent auction and raffle, and merchandise sales, as well as donations.
