Following the disastrous effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, mass shortages of facial masks and other necessities plagued the nation. High School students Michelle Song and Dalya Deuss started Masks For All CA (MFACA) to provide handmade facial masks for those who need it most, at zero cost to them. MFACA's efforts have been featured on several news publications, such as SF Richmond Review, Sing Tao Daily. To this day, MFACA has donated over 5,000 masks (in just over four months!) in California and have collaborated with students in New Jersey, New York, New Mexico, and Los Angeles.
Our branch, MFANM, has been partnering with local schools, charitable organizations (such as Kitchen Angels), and professional distribution organizations to donate 100% cotton handmade masks to the citizens of the greater Santa Fe area and the Navajo Nation. Fiscally sponsored by The Richmond District Neighborhood Center, we are able to apply for and utilize grants to fund our efforts, but what has helped us the most is the time and effort put in by volunteers. Masks For All New Mexico is seeking volunteers to expand our production of masks. Experienced sewists/ sewers would be greatly appreciated!
