San Diego Refugee Tutoring

WHO WE ARE

Teachers, community members, students (high school and college) and family members are joining together to support a small refugee community in the City Heights area.

WHO WE ARE SUPPORTING

Refugee families who have recently arrived in the United States and have a child or children who attend Ibarra Elementary School. These families speak many different languages and have settled here from places such as Burundi, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Eritrea, and Burma. These families arrive in San Diego speaking little or no English and have little familiarity with American customs, food, transportation, etc.

WHAT WE DO

Our goal during tutoring is to help the students with their homework in addition to teaching them basic English, vocabulary and math skills. Reading and literacy activities are also a very big part of our program. Our hope in this classroom is to provide as much individualized attention as possible and we would prefer our ratio to be 1:1.

WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE

Participants and volunteers come from a variety of different ethnic backgrounds, careers, cultures, and religions. Volunteers come from different parts of San Diego County. This is a unique volunteer opportunity that welcomes entire families to serve together. There is flexibility with our volunteer commitments ranging from tutoring once a month to tutoring every Monday to mentoring a family throughout the week. Volunteers are not required to have any formal training (though there is an application process) aside from speaking English fluently. Volunteers can come, sign up, and volunteer any given week.
