The Virginia Capital Trail Foundation (VCTF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to protecting, promoting, and enhancing the Virginia Capital Trail, a 51.7-mile paved shared-use path that links the historic capitals of Jamestown, Williamsburg, and Richmond. The Trail serves as a vital recreational and active transportation corridor, welcoming walkers, runners, cyclists, families, commuters, and visitors from across the Commonwealth and beyond. Recording over one million annual usage counts since 2020, the Trail strengthens local economies, reduces barriers to safe mobility, and fosters healthier communities.
At the VCTF, we believe everyone should have access to welcoming and safe outdoor spaces. Our work involves maintaining the Trail experience through advocacy and partnerships, delivering educational and fitness-focused programming, and hosting community events that encourage active living, environmental stewardship, and meaningful connection. We provide essential resources such as maps, rack cards, and informational materials, and oversee our Trail Ambassador and Adopt-a-Trail programs, both of which contribute to the ongoing maintenance, stewardship, and beautification of the Trail. We are strong advocates for trail growth and development at the local, state, and national levels. Advocating for more connector trails to neighborhoods, businesses, and senior centers, as well as supporting the development of a regional trail network across the Commonwealth. We are also committed to providing a world-class trail experience by enhancing the Virginia Capital Trail with wayfinding signs, trailheads, benches, shelters, and other amenities to make the trail experience welcoming and enjoyable for all.
