Our Mission

Accounting Aid Society creates an economy that works for everyone. We meet families and small businesses where they are on their financial journey and help them gain control of their finances through free tax preparation and financial education. For those struggling to make ends meet, even one small mistake on their tax forms could deprive them of critical tax dollars. We believe everyone should have access to trustworthy tax and financial help in order to create long-term economic prosperity in the communities we serve.

Who We Are

Accounting Aid Society has been offering free tax and financial services to taxpayers and small businesses in Detroit and southeast Michigan for over 45 years.

Our services have returned over $375 million in tax refunds to individuals and small businesses in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Livingston Counties. As a result, we’ve been named a “Best Managed Nonprofit” by Crain’s Detroit Business, a Neighborhood Builder by Bank of America, and we received the 2017 Governor’s Service Award for Outstanding Volunteer Program.

We use taxes to build relationships, and relationships to build futures. Often, a tax return is the largest sum of money a family sees all year. We help individuals and small businesses navigate the challenges surrounding taxes and financial matters.

With tax preparation as a catalyst, we help stabilize a household’s finances. More than 600 volunteers work alongside our clients to identify barriers to financial well-being and provide the resources and tools to overcome them.
