MONTCLAIR EARLY MUSIC

Montclair Early Music (MEM) is an early music ensemble that brings to life the beauty and complexity of early music to audiences.

With a focus on historically informed performance, the ensemble strives to recreate the sound and spirit of music from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, early American music, Balkan, Sephardic, and Al-Andalus early music. Our music transports listeners to another time and place, evoking the pageantry and majesty of courtly life, the solemnity and mystery of religious rites, and the joy and humor of popular entertainment.

We are primarily a Recorder and String player ensemble with occasional addition of other period instruments and singers. The recorder is an ancient instrument, in many sizes and ranges, which match vocal ranges and there is much music written for the recorders. As an all volunteer ensemble/organization, we are heavily dependent on volunteers to assist us in areas such as maintaining our music library, applying for grants, writing press releases.
