Heroes Read harnesses pop culture and the arts to foster a love of reading and learning in under-resourced communities—improving literacy, engagement, and long-term educational success.

Heroes Read is a growing nonprofit dedicated to fighting literacy gaps using the engaging power of comic books, graphic novels, and pop culture.

We operate under the Vision that every child should have access to stories that reflect who they are, where comics and pop culture are gateways to learning, and where everyday heroes spark joy, confidence, and a lifelong love of reading.

Whom We Serve

We focus our efforts on under-resourced communities, specifically targeting Title I schools, public libraries, and community centers where children and teens often lack access to high-interest, relevant reading material.

• The Need: We address the challenge that traditional reading materials often fail to engage students who are struggling or reluctant readers.
• The Impact: By providing diverse graphic novels and high-interest books, we meet students where they are, transforming reading from a daunting academic task into a rewarding, engaging superpower.

• Engagement First: We prioritize fun and relevance, believing that a student who is excited to read a comic is a student on the path to proficiency.
• Accessibility: We ensure our book distribution programs are streamlined to reach the students and educators who need them most, immediately boosting classroom resources.
• Stewardship: We are committed to efficient use of donor funds. We are currently implementing a new Revolving Fund to maximize bulk purchasing power, ensuring every dollar buys more books and achieves greater reach.

Building Our Capacity

Heroes Read is at a pivotal inflection point, transitioning from a successful startup phase to a scalable, sustainable nonprofit. Our focus is currently on structural investment—building the professional systems and governance needed to dramatically increase our book distribution.

We are implementing essential internal capacity, including establishing a Revolving Fund to maximize book purchasing power, which will support our goal of scaling our impact to 1,000+ books annually.

We are actively rebuilding our Board of Directors to bring in specialized expertise—particularly in finance (Treasurer) and corporate partnership—to ensure we have the capacity to sustain and grow this vital mission. Joining our team means supporting a dynamic organization that uses innovative methods to achieve a vital educational mission.
