Communities in Schools of Jacksonville

Communities In Schools of Jacksonville is the Premier Provider of In School Drop Out Prevention Services in Duval County Public Schools.

For seventeen years Communities In Schools has been working with Duval County’s most at-risk students, helping them stay in school and prepare for life. The program began in 1990 as an integral part of the Mayor’s response to the 1988 Jacksonville Community Council (JCCI) study entitled School Drop-Out Prevention which cited the staggering economic and social impact of the increasing dropout rate to the city of Jacksonville.

Communities In Schools started in one middle school with fifty students and has since grown to become the premier provider of in-school dropout prevention programs for the expanding population of at-risk youth in Duval County. Currently, Communities In Schools provides services to more than 6,600 children in 65 elementary, middle and high schools in Jacksonville.

The local program is one of the highest performing affiliates in the nation’s largest dropout prevention network. Communities In Schools has been recognized by Worth Magazine as “one of the top 100 organizations most likely to save the world. “

We understand that so much of what happens in the classroom is influenced by conditions outside of school. By bringing caring adults directly into the schools to address children’s unmet needs, Communities In Schools provides the link between students, families, educators and the community so that teachers are free to teach and ALL students have the opportunity to learn.

Divisions of Dropout Prevention work under the Communities In Schools umbrella of servies include:

• Communities In Schools case management and school-based dropout prevention services in grades K-12
• TEAM-UP afterschool academic & recreational enrichment for grades K-8
• AmeriCorps Duval Reads literacy tutoring in grades K-8
• United Way's Achievers For Life case management and mentoring for grades 6-8
