Sustainable Beekeeping and Human Development (SuBeHuDe)
Misión
To build a better world through sustainable solutions by empowering vulnerable communities—particularly youth, women, and marginalised groups—through climate-smart livelihoods, sustainable beekeeping, environmental conservation, biodiversity restoration, and inclusive economic opportunities.
Acerca de
Sustainable Beekeeping and Human Development (SuBeHuDe) is a grassroots, Tanzanian non-governmental, nonprofit, and voluntary organisation established in 2015 by young sustainable development practitioners committed to advancing inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development.
We believe that communities are not simply recipients of development—they are leaders, innovators, and owners of solutions. Our approach is therefore rooted in community leadership, local knowledge, participation, and practical action. We work alongside communities to strengthen their skills, livelihoods, leadership, resilience, and access to opportunities that enable them to create lasting change.
Our Values
Our work is guided by the following core values:
- Community leadership and ownership – We listen to communities, value local knowledge, and support locally led solutions.
- Sustainability – We promote solutions that generate lasting social, economic, and environmental benefits.
- Inclusion and equity – We create meaningful opportunities for women, youth, vulnerable households, and marginalised groups.
- Integrity and accountability – We promote transparency, responsible stewardship of resources, learning, and measurable results.
- Innovation and learning – We encourage practical innovation, knowledge exchange, experimentation, and continuous improvement.
- Collaboration and partnership – We believe sustainable change is strongest when communities, civil society, government, academia, businesses, donors, and other stakeholders work together.
- Respect for people and nature – We promote human dignity while protecting, restoring, and sustainably managing the natural systems on which communities depend.
Whom We Serve
SuBeHuDe primarily works with rural, underserved, and climate-vulnerable communities in Tanzania, with particular attention to:
- Youth seeking decent employment, entrepreneurship, and livelihood opportunities;
- Women and women-led households seeking greater economic empowerment;
- Smallholder farmers and beekeepers;
- Vulnerable and marginalised households;
- Community-based organisations and local institutions;
- Emerging environmental and social change-makers; and
- Communities experiencing poverty, environmental degradation, climate-related risks, and limited access to essential services.
Our goal is to help people strengthen their ability to generate sustainable incomes, access knowledge and essential services, participate in decisions affecting their lives, and build resilience to social, economic, and environmental challenges.
What We Do
Our programmes bring together people, livelihoods, and the environment. Our key areas of work include:
- Sustainable beekeeping and meliponiculture;
- Beekeeping value-chain and market development;
- Regenerative agriculture and permaculture;
- Ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation;
- Climate action and climate-resilient livelihoods;
- Social enterprise and social entrepreneurship development;
- Youth and women's economic empowerment;
- Inclusive quality education and skills development;
- Basic healthcare and community health promotion;
- Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH);
- Renewable energy and circular economy solutions;
- Community capacity strengthening; and
- Volunteer engagement and community-led action.
Through our Volunteer Engagement and Exchange (VES) Program, we connect individuals and organisations with opportunities to contribute their time, knowledge, professional expertise, skills, networks, and creativity to meaningful social, environmental, educational, and economic initiatives.
Our Approach
SuBeHuDe takes a community-led, integrated, and solutions-oriented approach. We recognise that poverty, unemployment, environmental degradation, food insecurity, health challenges, limited education, and climate vulnerability are interconnected.
We therefore seek solutions that address multiple challenges at the same time.
For example, sustainable beekeeping can create income while providing incentives for communities to protect forests, pollinators, and biodiversity. Regenerative agriculture can improve soil health and food security while strengthening resilience to climate change. Social enterprise development can transform local challenges into opportunities for decent employment, innovation, and community-owned economic growth.
By connecting these approaches, we aim to generate social, economic, and environmental value simultaneously.
Our Experience and Impact
Since our establishment, SuBeHuDe has worked with communities to translate sustainable development principles into practical action.
Our reported achievements include:
- 20,000+ community members trained;
- 100,000 greener jobs and decent work opportunities created, particularly for youth and women; and
- 18,000+ hectares of degraded land restored.
We have also established family beekeeping initiatives, distributed improved beehives, promoted climate-smart livelihoods, supported community capacity development, and implemented ecosystem restoration and environmental conservation initiatives.
These achievements demonstrate our commitment to a development model in which local leadership, sustainable livelihoods, environmental stewardship, and inclusive economic opportunity reinforce one another.
Our Vision for the Future
SuBeHuDe envisions a sustainable world where people, planet, and prosperity thrive together.
Looking ahead, we aim to strengthen and scale community-led solutions across Tanzania while contributing to knowledge exchange, partnerships, and sustainable development initiatives across East Africa.
We welcome collaboration with community organisations, volunteers, researchers, social entrepreneurs, impact investors, philanthropists, businesses, government institutions, development partners, and other organisations that share our commitment to inclusive development, environmental sustainability, climate resilience, decent livelihoods, and locally led change.
At the heart of everything we do is our mission:
To build a better world through sustainable solutions by empowering communities to become active leaders of their own development.
