Volunteers in Medicine Berkshires

Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) Berkshires is a free healthcare facility located in Great Barrington, MA that serves uninsured and underinsured residents of Berkshire County. VIM provides innovative multi-disciplinary healthcare services including primary care, dental, mental health, optometry, acupuncture, nutrition counseling, therapeutic massage and extensive case management.

We are primarily volunteer staffed, with about 150 active clinical and lay volunteers. The organization relies on our volunteers clinical, management and fundraising skills, as well as their creative energy and dedication to service, to build and operate this innovative not-for-profit facility. Volunteers are supported by a paid staff of nine full-time equivalents. Since opening in December 2004, the clinic has seen approximately 3,000 patients and provided over 32,000 patient visits.

After expanding in 2016, the physical plant provides comfortable space for patients and volunteers alike, with a reception area; 3 medical examination rooms; a dental suite with 2 operatories

and a laboratory; optometry clinic; counseling rooms; a classroom, massage/acupuncture treatment room and several offices.

VIM provides a respectful and caring atmosphere, with appointments scheduled to offer adequate time so that providers and patients are not rushed. Everyone – patients, administrative volunteers; medical volunteers – are treated with dignity and respect, towards a goal of building community based on teamwork and collaboration.
