Challenging Heights

Our mission

To champion children’s rights, empower families and communities across Ghana to break cycles of exploitation through rescue, long-term survivor support, and community-based prevention.

Challenging Heights is a Ghanaian nonprofit born from lived experience and driven by a strong belief that every child deserves safety, dignity, opportunity, and the freedom to build their own future.

Founded in 2005 by James Kofi Annan, a survivor of child trafficking and forced labour, Challenging Heights began as a grassroots effort to rescue children from exploitation on Lake Volta. More than two decades later, that effort has grown into a national organisation working across all 14 regions of Ghana to break cycles of child trafficking and economic exploitation.

Our work spans rescue, long-term survivor support and community-based prevention. We rescue children and young people from trafficking and exploitation and support them through recovery, education, mentorship, vocational training and reintegration. At the same time, we work alongside families, community leaders, schools and institutions to strengthen livelihoods, build resilient communities and create the protective systems children need to thrive.

Over the past two decades, Challenging Heights has supported the rescue of more than 2,888 children and young people from trafficking and exploitation, provided transformative support to more than 8,805 people, and reached more than 15,280 people through prevention initiatives. In 2025 alone, our work with partners contributed to the rescue of 201 people from human trafficking, bringing the cumulative number of people rescued since our founding to 2,888.

But behind every number is a young person with a name, a story, a dream and a future.

That is why we believe when you rescue one young person, you rescue a whole generation. By protecting children today, strengthening families and communities, and advocating for stronger systems and policies, Challenging Heights is helping build a Ghana where every child can grow up safe, free and full of possibility.
