Volunteer & Internship Opportunities at Challenging Heights Ghana

At Challenging Heights, we believe meaningful change happens when people, knowledge and experience come together around a shared commitment to protecting children and building safer futures.

For more than two decades, we have worked to end child trafficking and economic exploitation in Ghana through rescue, survivor support, education, skills development, family and community engagement, prevention, advocacy and child protection systems strengthening.

We welcome volunteers, interns and professionals who can contribute their skills, knowledge and time to this work while learning from our programmes, communities and local teams.

Our opportunities are needs-led. This means that placements depend on the organisation's current priorities, programme needs and our ability to provide a meaningful and appropriate experience.

Volunteer and Internship Opportunities

Child Education & Learning Support

Support children and young people in our recovery and reintegration programmes through educational activities, literacy and numeracy support, tutoring, creative learning and other age-appropriate learning interventions. Volunteers should have relevant experience in education, teaching or child development.

Trauma Healing & Psychosocial Support

Qualified psychologists, counsellors and other appropriately trained mental-health professionals with experience in trauma-informed care, child psychology or survivor recovery can support our recovery-centre programmes. This may include contributing specialist knowledge, strengthening staff capacity, developing appropriate therapeutic approaches and supporting children and young people affected by trafficking and exploitation.

Monitoring, Evaluation, Research & Learning

Work alongside our teams to strengthen data collection, analysis, documentation and learning systems. Opportunities may include supporting programme evaluations, research projects, data systems and evidence generation to help us understand and demonstrate our impact.

Communications, Storytelling & Advocacy

Support our communications and advocacy work through research, writing, storytelling, digital content, photography and video, media engagement, policy communication and stakeholder outreach. We particularly value people who can help translate complex child-protection issues into compelling stories and accessible public information.

Partnerships & Fundraising

Contribute to building relationships with potential partners, researching funding opportunities, developing proposals, creating fundraising materials and strengthening our ability to communicate our impact to donors and partners.

Teaching

We welcome qualified teachers, teacher trainees and education professionals who can support children and young people through tutoring, literacy and numeracy support, classroom assistance, homework support and engaging learning activities. Volunteers can also contribute to developing creative and child-friendly approaches to learning.

Library & Reading

Librarians, library professionals and passionate readers who can help strengthen our library and reading activities are welcomed. Volunteers may support library organisation, reading sessions, literacy activities, book clubs and initiatives that encourage children to discover the joy and possibilities of reading.

Sports Coaching

Sports coaches and enthusiasts with experience in various sporting disciplines to help children and young people develop their talents, teamwork, discipline and confidence. Opportunities may include soccer, athletics, basketball, volleyball and other sports based on the volunteer's expertise and programme needs.

Music & Creative Arts

We welcome musicians, music teachers and creative arts practitioners who can introduce children and young people to keyboard, drums, singing and other musical instruments and creative disciplines. These activities provide opportunities for self-expression, confidence-building, creativity and enjoyment while helping young people discover and develop their talents.

Group Volunteer & Professional Engagements

We welcome carefully planned group engagements. Groups may support short-term projects related to child protection, prevention, education, livelihoods, communications, research or organisational development.

What We Value

Our volunteer and internship programme is guided by a simple principle: the child comes first. We prioritise the safety, dignity, privacy and best interests of every child. Volunteers work alongside our staff and community partners, bringing relevant skills while respecting the knowledge and experience already within the communities we serve.

Safeguarding & Eligibility

Because we work directly with children and survivors of trafficking and exploitation, safeguarding is central to every placement. Volunteers and interns must comply with Challenging Heights' safeguarding, confidentiality and professional conduct requirements. Depending on the role, this may include a background check, references and relevant professional qualifications.

Duration & Costs

Placements vary according to programme needs, with most internships lasting two to six months or shorter. Volunteer and internship positions are generally unpaid, and participants are responsible for their own personal expenses unless otherwise agreed.
