The Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913 by 22 students at Howard University. These young women wanted to use their collective strength to promote academic excellence; to provide scholarships; to provide support to the underserved; educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy; and to highlight issues and provide solutions for problems in their communities.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a public service organization rooted in social action. The first public act by the Delta Founders was participation in the Women’s Suffrage March in Washington, D.C., March 1913.

In realizing its mission, Delta Sigma Theta provides an extensive array of public service initiatives through its Five-Point Program Thrust of Economic Development; Educational Development; International Awareness and Involvement; Physical and Mental Health; and Political Awareness and Involvement.

New York Alumnae Chapter (NYAC)

New York Alumnae Chapter, the first graduate chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was approved at the National convention in December 1920 and chartered in January 1921. Pledged to academic excellence, cultural enrichment, social welfare and community service, the 100 plus members of the New York Alumnae Chapter continue to demonstrate leadership skills as they work on programs and projects for the young, the needy, and the elderly. NYAC’s service area encompasses Manhattan, New York from 155th Street south, from the Hudson River to the East River.
