Academia Cesar Chavez Mission and History of the School Academia Cesar Chavez is dedicated to providing a quality dual-language education that prepares critical thinking, socially competent, values driven, and culturally aware bilingual and bi-literate learners by advocating Latino cultural values in an environment of “familia” and community.
Academia Cesar Chavez School grew out of the Hispanic Pre-College Project, as successful 10 year outreach program from the University of St. Thomas. Parents, community members, and community organizations requested to develop a school that was responsive to the educational needs of Latino children. Academia Cesar Chavez opened in September of 2001 with 168 students and 27 staff members. Today, Academia Cesar Chavez has 295 students enrolled.
Student Demographics and Cultural Integration While ACC School is primarily a Latino-oriented bilingual community, it is also inclusive of other cultures for which family values, unity, and respect are of importance. Of those students enrolled in October 2008, 276 (94%) Latino descent; 9 (3%) African American, or of African descent; 5 (2%) American Indian descent; 5 (2% Caucasian; 274 (93%) eligible for free reduced meals; 114 (40%) identified as Limited English Proficient (LEP); and 33 12%) identified as having an individualized education program for special education.
