The Sports and Cultural Academy For Street Children

To use Education, Culture, and Sports to expose the hidden talents of children living on the streets of Accra

The Street Academy was founded in November of 1986 by the current executive director, Ataa Lartey. It was incorporated as an NGO in Ghana in 1993. We believe that play, sports, music, dance, and art are also essential elements of a child's education. Non-formal and experiential education not only bolster lessons learned in basic education, but also provide children with creative outlets, opportunities for self-strengthening and self-reliance, and provide alternate paths to leading a successful and productive lives.

We run a 100% free non-formal school for street children who have had little or no schooling. These children would otherwise be fending for themselves on the streets of Accra. In addition to basic schooling, our children also participate in sports and cultural activities. A school day is roughly divided equally between book learning and these activities. We also provide free school uniforms, free school supplies, free basic health monitoring, and one free meal. Our students go on to formal schools, artisan or vocational training, or professional sports. We pay their way--including any school fees--at every step. To us, success is a healthy, learned, and well-adjusted young adult.
