Alliance for Microbicide Development
Acerca de
The Alliance defines itself as a catalyst, communicator, convener, and problem-solver. It is a global coalition of representatives from biopharmaceutical companies, nonprofit research institutions, and health advocacy groups. It is the authoritative source of information on microbicide development, convener of dialogue on key policy issues, educator about the public health potential of microbicides, and advocate for the resources needed to develop them.
What Is a Microbicide? Microbicides are being developed as substances intended to reduce or prevent transmission of HIV and/or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) when applied topically to genital mucosal surfaces--"topical microbicides", in other words. In addition, research attention is being directed at the possibility of using oral antiretroviral therapy, specifically tenofovir, for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection.
