Twiga Vision Tanzania is a local, community-led NGO based in Arusha, Northern Tanzania. Founded in 2013 by Daniphord Mjawah — a member of the local community with a long history in the non-profit sector — Twiga was created to respond more directly and ethically to the needs of women, children and communities often left behind by top-down development models.
Our organization is rooted in the belief that true social change must be inclusive, respectful and co-created with those it aims to serve. We are a committed, intercultural team working hand-in-hand with local partners and international volunteers to implement sustainable, human-centered projects.
Over the years, Twiga Vision has supported hundreds of women through entrepreneurship training, emotional support and health education. We've also run programs for children, such as literacy workshops, tutoring and the creation of a community-based school. Our actions go beyond service delivery — we focus on building autonomy, confidence and lasting local impact.
In 2022, a major turning point occurred when our long-time sponsor withdrew abruptly. This challenged us deeply but also opened the door to rebuild with stronger foundations. Rather than compromise our values, we chose to reassert our independence and create our own ethical volunteer program. This program directly supports local projects while providing a meaningful, culturally sensitive experience for each participant.
Today, Twiga is in a phase of renewal — still small, but strong in values, driven by purpose and eager to grow responsibly. Volunteering with us means becoming part of a sincere, respectful and transformative journey. You won’t just “help” — you’ll learn, share and contribute to a truly community-rooted project.
