Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative

Our mission is to build a more equitable, sustainable, and healthy community through cycling for all. We promote bicycling as a low-cost, sustainable, and healthy mode of transportation and recreation. We reduce waste by using recycled materials and directing unusable bicycle components to a metal recycling facility.

Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving the Alexandria and Arlington, Virginia area. Founded in 2010, we operate two shops and a warehouse — refurbishing donated bicycles, selling bikes at affordable prices, and providing free bicycle scholarships to adults and children who couldn't otherwise afford one.

We believe cycling shouldn't be a privilege. We work to make sure that cost, language, and background are never barriers to getting on a bike — through sliding-scale programs, free helmets and locks with scholarship bikes, and a welcoming space where every skill level is respected. Every bike we refurbish is one fewer in a landfill. Every rider we support is one more person with an affordable, healthy, sustainable way to get around.

Our volunteers — the Véloteers — make it all happen. No experience required. We provide hands-on training in bicycle mechanics, customer service, events, and more. Come for the bikes. Stay for the community.
