Background

The Global Paint for Charity, Inc. (AKA “GPC” or “Global Paint”) is a non-profit organization headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia working together with commercial businesses and other non-profit organizations, residential households, and Paint Manufacturers to recycle post-consumer Latex paint for our cause. We strive to protect the environment, change lives and beautify poor communities throughout the world. We started our programs in March 2010, hoping to collect 500 gallons of paint to renovate a school and an orphanage within the year. The spectacular response from our supporters, partners, volunteers and the media has encouraged us to continue to collect paint and raise money to distribute it in very poor villages in isolated rural locations around the world. We have redistributed more than 120,000 gallons of paint to help with renovations and rejuvenation of family homes, homeless shelters, schools, churches, orphanages, and hospitals in many major cities in the U.S. and targeted communities around the world.

While there may be more pressing issues in developing countries than the facade of a wall, a classroom or a building, we believe that the right color in a room can truly change the ambiance of a place and the attitudes of those who inhabit it.

We are changing lives and saving the world one gallon of paint at a time.

Our work is grouped into four categories:

  1. Collection of paint donations
  2. Transportation and storage of paint donations
  3. Consolidation and repackaging
  4. Distribution and paint project.

Collection

We pick up paint donations from local residences, professional offices and buildings, retail shops, hotels, hospitals, apartment complexes, and churches. We allow for residences and businesses to properly dispose of their leftover paint without having to pay big fees at the point of collection. The program has two subprograms called ONE STOP PAINT DROP and ONE STOP PAINT DRIVE. Because of our success and amazing support from the MEDIA, we are able to partner with organizations such as Salvation Army, Goodwill, Home Depot and Sherwin Williams in certain areas to recycle unused paint. Our volunteers visit these participating organizations monthly to pick up donated paint and monetary donations. Our drop-off locations may vary by retailer and participant, so please check with stores and organizations in your area before taking your paint for disposal. For information on collection sites or our local donation drive in your area, please email us at info@globalpaints.org or visit our Next Event page.

Global Paint Will Take the Following Items

  • Latex Paint: Interior and exterior latex paint
  • Water based paint, Flat, Gloss, Semi-Gloss etc
  • Oil Paint: Interior and exterior oil based paint, New/unopened containers only.

Storage

Our paint collections are transported to secured locations for storage and consolidation. The table below lists all the locations where GPC currently receives donation of space for paint storage and consolidation in Georgia. For information on how to donate storage space or assist with paint transportation, please email info@globalpaints.org.

Consolidation and Repackaging

  1. Sort paint by type and colors. GPC accepts oil-based paint only if it is in a new, unopened, full container.
  2. Screen and inspect each can of latex paint for unusable paint, including bad or dried-out paint.
  3. Check labels and sort paint by characteristics such as color and type (for example, interior versus exterior).
  4. Shake and dump latex paint from the original containers into drums or vats.
  5. Consolidate the paint for donation or shipment overseas.

Our process for latex paint involves mixing and re-packaging only. We do not add substances or change the chemistry of latex paint. While we check paint labels and visually inspect the condition of latex paint to screen out any contaminated paint, we do not currently have the funds or resources needed to test for metals, VOC, bacteria or other contaminants. The paint that cannot be used gets recycled and kept out of landfills. The good news is, students from Georgia Tech, have offered to help design a machine to process the paint. However, the costs vary depending upon our desired methods and technology. Our goal is to raise significant funding to build a plant where we will be able to process 3,000-5,000 gallons of paint a day, creating jobs not just in paint processing, but in transportation and logistics, as well. That would be a dream come true for the Global Paint project.

Distribution and Hosting Paint Project

Our recycled paint is donated to non-profit groups and missionary groups for renovations at orphanages, schools, colleges, sport centers, homeless shelters, veterans' homes, and to property owners in need all around the world. An estimated 70% of the paint is shipped overseas, while 30% is re-donated to local residents for community projects at no charge. GPC works closely with its distribution partners operating in developing countries to manage the distribution of paint. We seeks out organizations that have a proven track record of successfully getting the paint to the vulnerable populations, distributing it properly, and being able to handle the responsibilities of a paint project. So far, we have donated paint for projects in Kenya, Liberia, Equatorial Guinea, Haiti, Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica.

At Global Paint for Charity, we believe a layer of paint on the walls can change a life for years to come.

Global Paint currently supports the following projects

  • Qualifying residential homes
  • Homeless shelters, repainting historic cemetery and vacant houses.
  • Beautification and renovation of Classrooms, schools, libraries, orphanages, churches, and youth sport stadiums
  • Community Cleanups
  • Garden’s Restoration and Cleanup.
  • Housing Rehabilitation Projects for Veterans

<img src="http://globalpaints.org/img/partner1.png"> Not only our projects help protect the environment, create jobs, brighten their future and spur creativity, but some projects also have a real health benefits in an age of uncertainty surrounding global outbreaks. Paint can protect against mold, bacteria and germs, the presence of which have a disproportionately negative effect on health outcomes in poorer communities. Paint can even be mixed with insecticide to stave off mosquitoes, which carry malaria and other viruses like Zika and yellow fever that kill more than 6 million people per year.

Environmental benefits and outcomes

Our decisions today are responsible for determining the outcome of our planet in future. With responsible recycling practices, we can ensure the reduction of resources, healthy ecosystems, and a healthier society. Global Paint for Charity, Inc., (GPC) is focused on the future of our children and their environments. The process of recycling unused paint to take harmful waste and using it as a resource to help those in need makes Global Paint one of the greatest causes to support.

The U.S. EPA has found that paint can be a source of both air and water pollution- especially if it ends up in landfills. Improper paint disposal can have disastrous effects. One gallon of improperly disposed paint can pollute up to 250,000 gallons of drinking water, which can endanger species and destroy our fresh vegetables, fruits and drinking water.

By recycling unused paint today, we are protecting the environment and creating a brighter future for tomorrow.

Economic benefits and outcomes:

Global Paint is a youth and minority empowerment and community development organization. At Global Paint we uplift, empower and support the positive development of young people and female entrepreneur in a way that engages their natural innovation and creativity to create beautiful and sustainable communities. Our framework places youth and minorities at the center of everything we do. The organization and our collaborations support small business owners, and create a Microfinance program to help the underprivileged people to launch a small paint business and assist them to realize their dreams.

Our paint contractors are small business owners, facing challenges, including access to affordable small-business loans. Grants and financial assistance can help bridge the funding gap. Without financial support and education their business can’t grow. Unlike other microfinance programs, Global Paint provides access to small-business financing options, as well as help with setting up a successful painting business plan and financial statements, credit counseling and educational resources. We are looking for partners to support our microfinance programs with the best small-business loans to meet the youth and minorities in needs.
