Ryan Turner conceptualized the AKOBEN Foundation in the summer of 2011 with intent to bring focus to social justice, community service and self-empowerment. We envision the creation and establishment of a communal structure wherein citizens are productively mobilizing toward their goals. Through our five community outreach programs and various other community initiatives, we seek to serve and transform the Greater Baltimore area. Our name is inspired by the akoben which is an African war horn used to call people together for a particular purpose. Like the akoben, we are here to call the citizens of our city together so that we may assist one another in securing a brighter tomorrow.
