JRS Mae Hong Son Education Program

JRS is an international non-governmental organization with a mission to accompany, serve and advocate the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people.

JRS has been working with the Karenni Education Department (KnED) in Mae Hong Son’s refugee camps since 1997. As the major educational NGO working in these refugee camps, the objective of the program is to support the KnED at all levels of management to make sure that their educational system is effective, sustainable and inclusive. In order to achieve this, JRS supports the KnED in several sectors: •Teacher Training •Primary and Secondary Curriculum, Materials and Stipend Support •Special Education •Vocational School-based Program •Home School Liaison Program •Vocational Non-Formal Education Program •Management and Capacity Development

JRS is currently providing assistance to over 7,000 children and 400 teachers in 11 primary schools, 5 middle schools and 2 high schools in two camps. The primary goal of this support is to ensure the continuity of education while simultaneously developing the capacity of Karenni educators for future self-sufficiency.
