Founded in 2005, Truthdig is an award-winning, independent online news
magazine. As a truly progressive platform, Truthdig is dedicated to reporting
on issues that are insufficiently covered by mainstream media. The website’s
mission is to dig beneath the headlines, provide expert reporting and
commentary and offer an outlet for original work by exceptional journalists.
Truthdig is a hybrid with for-profit and non-profit components. Our non-
profit arm, Truthdig Fund, is fiscally sponsored by philanthropic partner and
nonprofit accelerator Tides.
The Truthdig Fund at Tides is at the core of Truthdig’s operation. Through
the non-profit, Truthdig is able to give overlooked and underappreciated
voices and perspectives a platform to inspire positive change in the world.
Our steadfast commitment brings us grants from foundations and
philanthropists and contributions from readers who want to ensure that
excellent reporting and commentary thrive on the web.
The Truthdig Fund at Tides has several special projects. Through Global
Voices: Truthdig Women Reporting, Truthdig hires female journalists from
around the globe to write about issues affecting people in their home
countries. Truthdig Fund also sponsors Countering Violence Against Women,
a series in which skilled writers shed light on gender-based violence.
Additionally, grants for activism enable us to send correspondents to the
front lines of events like the Women’s March, the Poor People’s Campaign
and #StopKavanaugh.
The Truthdig Fund at Tides also regularly allocates funds for reporting on
vital issues related to the environment, social justice, prison reform and the
arts.
Unlike at most media companies, ads and the income they produce do not
play a big role in Truthdig’s operation. The site is not influenced by
advertisers or shareholders and is not controlled by any outside entity.
