LSU AgCenter and Orleans Parish 4-H Mentor Program

LSU Ag Center has established a mentoring program through the 4H program in Orleans Parish for youth ages 10-14 years old. We are in need of mentors ages 18 and above who are interested in contributing to the lives of youth in the New Orleans area. Mentors can dedicate as little as one hour a month to improving the life of a child and the future of our community.

Our program is unique because we offer more than just a relationship. We integrate materials from a curriculum entitled “Character Counts” which educates youth in how to make positive choices by teaching the 6 pillars of character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Children enrolled in our mentoring program also participate in a 4-H club which emphasizes a “learn-by-doing” approach to education and aids youth in the development of leadership, self-direction, and interpersonal/life skills. Youth are exposed to the concept of altruism by participating in organized service projects of their own choosing and our program involves the family. Through Monthly “Family Night Out” activities, hosted and organized by our staff, youth, mentors and parents have an opportunity to work together on fun and educational activities with the objective of strengthening family bonds.

We expect that mentors commit for a minimum of one academic year, and follow through with that commitment. The youth we serve need structure and consistency, which we expect mentors to assist in providing. We will plan and provide all activities ahead of time; mentors need to bring nothing other than an open mind.
