Community School of West Seattle

The mission of the Community School of West Seattle (CSWS) is to create a space in which our children, teachers and families can be part of a cooperative educational team. Collaboratively, we work to inspire and support curiosity, confidence, empathy, resiliency, and the social emotional well-being of every child. Our curriculum is based upon the principles of respect, responsibility, and community through play, exploration, and discovery. We are committed to building and maintaining a responsive environment that is dedicated to inclusivity, equity and strong relationships.

Community School of West Seattle was founded in 2005 by a group of local parents who believed young children deserve a learning environment centered around curiosity, creativity, and connection.

From the beginning, the vision was to create a school where children could explore, play, and grow in a space that honors their ideas and natural sense of wonder.

Today, Community School of West Seattle continues that vision as a Reggio-inspired, play-based preschool where children are encouraged to ask questions, investigate their interests, and build meaningful relationships with peers and teachers.

Located in the heart of West Seattle, our school is more than just a place for early education — it’s a community. Families, educators, and children work together to create an environment where every child feels seen, respected, and valued.

Our educators observe children’s interests and use them as the foundation for learning experiences. Whether children are building with natural materials, creating art, exploring science, or playing outdoors, their ideas guide the journey.
