Cameras For Girls

We support young African women to claim space, shift narratives, and build careers in male-dominated media by training them in photography and ethical storytelling.

Cameras For Girls is a Canadian registered charity and Ugandan nonprofit using photography, ethical storytelling, mentorship, and access to professional equipment to support young women in Africa as they move toward paid work in journalism, photography, communications, and media.

Founded in 2018, Cameras For Girls began in Uganda and has since expanded to Tanzania, with plans to grow across Africa. Through our year-long program, young women receive a camera to keep, hands-on photography training, business and workplace readiness skills, ethical storytelling education, and ongoing mentorship.

Many of the women we support are studying or graduating from journalism and communications programs but lack the practical skills, equipment, and networks needed to compete in male-dominated media spaces. Cameras For Girls helps close that gap by supporting them to build portfolios, strengthen their voices, and create pathways into paid work.

To date, 80% of our graduates have found paid work in various media-related professions.

Our long-term vision is to expand to seven African countries by 2030 and support 30,000 women with the tools, training, and opportunities to tell stories, earn income, and shift representation in media.
