Maya Health Alliance | Wuqu' Kawoq

Maya Health Alliance | Wuqu’ Kawoq was founded in 2007 to address the health needs of indigenous communities in Guatemala. We find innovative strategies to the most pressing health needs, while prioritizing empowerment and preservation of Maya language and culture. We work in rural areas of Guatemala providing comprehensive primary care via mobile clinics, supporting midwives and health promoters, and offering community education in the Mayan languages spoken by our patients. We have approximately 20,000 patients a year and have lowered childhood malnutrition by 30-40% in these communities. We have developed an innovative care navigator role, helping to improve outcomes for patients with complex needs such as cancer, by coordinating and advocating for medical care within the public health system. We are closing the health care gap and improving the vitality of these communities. Where others say no, we say yes.
