Founded in 2001, the Center for Civil Rights is dedicated to removing educational, economic, political, and social inequalities that inhibit the potential of minorities and low-income people. Led by Julius L. Chambers, one of the nation’s foremost social justice advocates and civil rights attorneys, the Center’s mission is to: - represent, educate, and advocate for minority and low-income people, principally in the American South, building their capacity to remove unfair racial and economic barriers and to improve their communities; - lead in influencing public policies at local, state, and national levels and in developing innovative, effective, and sustainable programs that remove racial and economic inequalities; - engage university faculty in scholarly research, education, and service to effectively challenge inequalities that disproportionately affect minority and low-income people; and - ensure that future generations of attorneys are equipped to continue the ongoing campaign to secure fair and equal opportunities for minority and low-income people.
