    INTRODUCTION

The purpose of Humble Youth Foundation Uganda is to walk into youths’ lives, make them get visibility, recognition and for them to show Impact of our concerns.

Humble Youth Foundation exists to transform and strengthen the lives of young people and their

families. We will provide on-site free of charge behavioral change, health services programs to prevent substance abuse, improve family relationships and develop life skills. The key element that makes all the difference, is having solid Youth-Adult relationships and spending time and energy getting to know and trust the youth in an out-of-school loitering about like in regard to Youth in Uganda.

While some formal education systems also employ increasingly participatory approaches, our

project in Uganda will focus on youth empowerment initiatives outside of formal schooling.

Those who will engage with us will benefit by being part of a better, stronger, healthier community

particularly in the Slums of Bwaise in Kampala where we live, work and support healthy, safe and

successful youth, their families and communities.

We will enable Youths to share experiences and stories about themselves in order for them to gain

Exposure to improve their livelihoods. We will also provide Youths with Financial Support, appropriate

Guidance and Mentorship that will allow them achieve their academic and personal goals.

HYF GUIDELINES TO YOUTH ACTIVITIES AND ENGAGEMENTS

Youth development involves engaging youths in meaningful and challenging activities, during which the youth show Smiles and Facial expressions of deep concentration on work with noisy hum/murmur of activity, laughter and a lot of discussion. There could be movement and the room may look messy, but a creative project could clearly be underway. That’s how a group of youth work together in one room.

In designing projects that truly engage youth we must create a climate that is social, creative, relevant and challenging. We must build teamwork, communication and achievement evaluations.

Creating Environment that Promotes Youth Engagement with us:

    1. Adults in our Projects must Prepare to share power with the youths.

Adults should have an honest desire to share power with the youth in their programs. Then

gradually, instead of Adults doing the Planning, Organizing and Evaluating alone, Adult Leaders

can take steps to involve the Youth in all aspects of programming.

    2. Adults must learn to Build relationships with youth.

Getting to personally know each of the youth in an out-of-school time program will be helpful to

both the Youth and Adults while also asking questions and listening attentively may encourage

older Youth to open up and share their thoughts and feelings.

    3. Encourage exploration, discovery and self-expression.

Adolescent Youth may be restless trying out all sorts of ideas to see what fits. To do this

effectively, they need to have many diverse experiences. We will try to include as much variety

and choice of activities as possible, Learning about different cultures, religions, languages, food,

art and celebrations, trying out different types of games and sports or planning a field trip to

    introduce a new experience.

    4. Inculcate the skills to make learning meaningful.

We want our youth to become lifelong learners. Being open, curious and interested in the

environment around them is what motivates children and youth to keep trying and learning new

things. Youth also need skills to gain new knowledge. Reading and researching with a critical eye

    5. Provide leadership opportunities.

Youth have a lot of ideas and they want to put their ideas into action. Having leadership

opportunities gives them a chance to test out whether their ideas make sense and are useful to

the community. We will skillfully build discussions about leadership and age-appropriate

practices that develop leadership skills into their curriculum in Bwaise Slums

    6. Developing advanced Youths’ skills.

Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking and Self-Direction are useful qualities we need

if we are to work with youth in designing projects that build the above four skills. Hands-on,

group projects that are personally meaningful to youth and that include concrete goals, a

timeline and an end product are ideal for developing skills.

    7. Reflect and adjust the program to improve Youth Engagement.

Adult Leaders will always reflect and communicate regularly on what projects worked,

why they worked or were not successful, and how to adjust the program to keep

    improving Youth Engagement.
