Defying Legal Gravity is a legal empowerment organization dedicated to democratizing the law and expanding access to justice. We believe that legal literacy should not be reserved for lawyers or those with privilege. Instead, everyone should have access to the knowledge and tools necessary to understand their rights, navigate legal systems, and advocate for themselves and their communities.

Our work is rooted in the belief that many of the challenges people face are not simply personal problems but legal problems that often go unrecognized because individuals lack access to legal knowledge. At the same time, millions of people face legal issues without access to legal representation. We see legal education as a critical strategy for addressing this access to justice crisis.

Through our programs, we bring foundational legal education directly to communities, teaching concepts traditionally taught in the first year of law school in ways that are engaging, practical, and accessible. We serve young people and community members who have historically been excluded from legal knowledge and legal power, with a particular focus on individuals living in communities that are disproportionately impacted by inequitable legal systems.

Our programs combine legal education, civic engagement, and leadership development. Participants learn how the law shapes their daily lives, develop advocacy skills, and gain the confidence to use legal knowledge to solve problems, support others, and create change. We believe that when communities have access to legal knowledge, they are better equipped to protect their rights, strengthen their institutions, and build a more just society.
