Located in the heart of the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma, the Oaks Indian Mission (OIM) is a residential children’s home and historic site. Originally established in 1801 as a missionary outpost to the Cherokee people in Springplace, Georgia, the missionaries traveled with the Cherokee People to Oklahoma during their historic removal to Indian Territory known as the Trail of Tears. In 1842 the OIM re-opened in present day Oaks, Oklahoma where it continues to operate as a residential children’s home. The OIM is a non-profit 501(c)3 charitable organization affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
