Our Mission:

Provide therapeutic recreational opportunities to special needs youth and their families, free of charge.

Our Founder:

Darrell Eby has worked for many years to create this necessary and worthwhile organization. He founded Handicapped Challenge in 2005 after years of diligent work to make this dream come to fruition.

Darrell has a special place in his heart for special needs youths, their families and Handicapped Challenge as his son has been living with a severe disability for over 27 years. (The team at Handicapped Challenge is 100% invested in ensuring special needs youth, and their families, are successful in expanding their recreational options.)

Being the father of a special needs youth, Darrell knows firsthand how profoundly adverse this lifestyle can affect the immediate family of a challenged youth. The divorce rate of parents of special needs youths is 28% higher than the national average due to the time demands pertaining to therapy, doctor and social worker appointments. He understands the implicit necessity of taking a break, even if only for a day, a weekend or a week. Handicapped Challenge wants to provide this much needed break in order to lessen the load on these incredibly diligent and loving families.

How Handicapped Challenge works:

Small groups of disabled children will come to our retreat, for varying periods of time, which will be set up to accommodate their specific needs. We will provide them uniquely individual experiences in a camp like setting. This will provide therapy in so many different ways.

Indoor housing will be standard yet with the option of outdoor camping if desired (weather permitting). Special needs youth will be accompanied by parents, caregivers, or custodians. They will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities which include fishing, archery, swimming, camp fires, horseback riding, hay rides, sledding, ATV rides, remote control car racing, and snowmobile rides, to name just a few.

In addition, they will acquire new skills and interests they can further develop and continue to benefit from for the rest of their lives. When a child finds an activity of interest we will assist in helping them to find and attain a grant to help them procure equipment and support in their own community. This aspect is essential as many families of these exceptional youths aren't aware of the funding available to them in order to enhance the progress of their challenged youth.

Our therapists will evaluate each child’s individual needs, and, where possible, offer individualized plans in order for them to cope with the challenging daily aspects of their lives more effectively.

Adults will have the chance to relax in the pool, lodge, woods, on the lawns or spend the day with their child learning new therapeutic ways of having fun. Adults will also have the opportunity to take advantage of massages, good food, social interaction with other special needs families and a chance to rest.

It is our hope that by granting these kids, and their families, a chance to escape the daily grind of the handicapped lifestyle, a pleasant change can be provided to them.

How to qualify your child or young adult for a Handicapped Challenge retreat:

  • The individual’s doctor must certify that he/she has a lifelong mental or physical disability and deem it safe to travel and participate in camp activities.
  • All disabled children will be considered. Children unable to attend other camps for financial reasons will have priority.
  • No religious, ethnic or any other protected status will enter into eligibility decisions.

Handicapped Challenge, Inc. needs your financial support.

Please, HELP US so we can help these exceptional youths and their families.

In addition to your financial support there will be opportunities for volunteers as our organization grows.
