WHO WE ARE

The International Affairs Council (Raleigh/Research Triangle, NC), a 501(c)(3) non-profit membership organization, champions broad public understanding of international affairs and “person-to-person diplomacy.” Our core mission is to provide the general public, including K-12 students, with a rich array of opportunities to build knowledge of global issues, meet distinguished international visitors, and gain appreciation of the world’s extraordinary diversity of history, culture, and perspective. From offices in Raleigh, we serve the multi-county Research Triangle Region of North Carolina. IACNC is recognized nationally for excellence in its core mission delivery, which it accomplishes on a very limited budget by leveraging the experience of dedicated staff and the contributions of a seventeen-member Board of Directors, scores of members who offer home hospitality to international visitors, our committed volunteers, and our talented interns.

WHAT WE DO

Founded in 1973, IACNC serves the community through two core functions. We sponsor a wide mix of public programs on international affairs themes, including panel presentations and lectures; selection of American Marshall Fellows from North Carolina; the WorldQuest competition for high school students; and our annual “Citizen of the World” Gala Award Dinner.

We also host sixty to seventy international visitor delegations each year on their visits to the Research Triangle region. Here we build global understanding by facilitating direct, peer-to-peer exchange between our international visitors and their Research Triangle region-based professional counterparts, with whom they exchange ideas, explore best practices, and initiate enduring professional ties. We also connect our visitors directly with IACNC members, who engage our guests with hospitality in the form of home-cooked meals, overnight accommodations, and shared cultural activities.

Our visitors, chosen by U.S. officials overseas, are current or rising leaders in government, politics, business, media, the environment, education, arts, and every other societal sector. Delegations are invited through various federal programs, initiatives including the Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program; the Library of Congress’ Open World program; and USAID’s Community Connections program; and others. The United States Congress supports such programming in recognition of the exceptional value of this “soft diplomacy.” Notably, more than 350 prior IVLP participants have later served as heads of government, while thousands of others have served in cabinet-level roles, in national legislatures, and as heads of corporate, educational, artistic, and other enterprises. In countless ways, the United States benefits from the fact that each of these individuals has enjoyed a very positive experience in the U.S. that included rewarding professional and personal exchange.

As an IACNC member, you’ll enjoy our wide mix of programs and frequent opportunities for direct, person-to-person global exchange with our many visitors from around the world.
