First and foremost a social service program for the aging population, RSVP’s purpose is to enable the older person to become or remain active in the community and to utilize the talents and experiences gained over a lifetime. RSVP was initiated when it became clear that older persons encounter obstacles to volunteering in the form of (1) agencies’ resistance to accepting the elderly as volunteers and (2) their own lack of confidence in offering their services.

RSVP, a nationwide program, is funded by federal (Corporation for National and Community Service), state (Illinois Department on Aging) and local funds. As a cost-sharing program of the federal government, an RSVP project receives roughly 70% federal funding. The remaining balance of funds must be provided from local resources, in-kind contributions or cash.

RSVP receives further assistance from its Ambassadors volunteers, including representatives from RSVP stations, businesses, public relations firms, medical staff (nurses), university education staff, social services supervisors, lawyers and legal staff, community leaders/public officials and RSVP volunteers themselves, who assist in fund raising, public relations, and program operations.

RSVP annually provides positive logic model impact outcome results in the areas of Grandparents Please’s Youth Mentoring project, Public Safety, Homeland Security, Environmental Stewardship, Economic Opportunity, Veterans and Military Families, Congregate Meals, Delivery of Health Services, Health and Nutrition, Food Distribution and Collection, Senior Citizens Assistance, and Education- Tutoring and Mentoring.
