Martha Graham is recognized as a primal force of the 20th century, alongside Picasso, James Joyce, Stravinksy and Frank Lloyd Wright. In 1998 TIME magazine named Martha Graham "Dancer of the Century," and People magazine named her among the female "Icons of the Century." As a choreographer she was as prolific as she was complex. She created 181 ballets and a dance technique that has been compared to ballet in its scope and magnitude. Her approach to dance and theater revolutionized the art form and her innovative physical vocabulary has irrevocably influenced dance worldwide.

The Martha Graham Dance Company continues to be a world leader in the evolving art form of modern dance, building on its legacy of innovation as it showcases classic American masterpieces alongside vital contemporary work. Graham’s repertory remains the single greatest collection of dance pieces created by a modern dancer. The Company is the oldest dance company in the country and the most respected contemporary dance group in the world. It implements four artistic initiatives: presenting exceptional modern dance in its home city and on tour; engaging audiences through activities designed to promote greater appreciation and enjoyment of modern dance; providing access through the Archive Project and the Google Arts and Cultural on-line exhibit; and presenting the Graham Studio Series.

In recent seasons, internationally acclaimed choreographers, including Kyle Abraham, Marie Chouinard, Lucinda Childs, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Michelle Dorrance, Lil Buck, Pontus Lidberg, Lar Lubovitch, and Annie-B Parson, have added significant work to the repertory. The Company also reclaims and presents significant historic dances, such as Graham’s solo Ekstasis, performed in 2017 after being absent from the stage for over seven decades. Company performances begin with either a simple introduction or a more elaborate audio-visual preface that provides background information. These introductions provide a welcome entry point for audience members new to the art form and an expanded framework to those familiar with Graham.

Since its inception, the Martha Graham Dance Company has received international acclaim from audiences in more than 50 countries throughout North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Russia, and the Middle East.
