Our mission is to foster public understanding of Earth’s weather, climate and environmental systems and to continue to produce, maintain, and analyze a meticulous, consistent record of weather and climate observations.
Blue Hill Observatory & Science Center is a nonprofit National Historic Landmark and a globally significant center for weather and climate observation. Founded in 1885 atop Great Blue Hill in Milton, Massachusetts, the Observatory is home to the longest continuously operating weather records in the United States—an irreplaceable climate archive used by scientists, educators, and institutions around the world.
Blue Hill is also a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Centennial Observing Station, recognized for more than 100 years of sustained, high-quality measurement and stewardship of the atmosphere. Through hurricanes, blizzards, heat waves, and changing technology, Blue Hill has remained a steadfast witness to New England’s climate—carefully observing, calibrating, and preserving data that helps society understand long-term change.
Today, we still conduct observation operations while bringing this world-class scientific legacy to life through public tours, school programs, field trips, community events, and hands-on learning. We serve students, teachers, families, researchers, and visitors of all ages—connecting people directly to real weather, real data, and real climate science. Blue Hill’s record is a national treasure and a world resource, and our mission is to protect it, expand its impact, and inspire the next generation of climate and science leaders.
