Animal Welfare Nonprofit Volunteer Internship Opportunity
Volunteer Recruiting Intern — Recruiting & Volunteer Operations Team
The Animal Cause, Inc. (TAC) is seeking college students enrolled in degree programs that require volunteer, service-learning, internship, practicum, or related experiential hours to join our Volunteer Recruiting & Operations Team.
This opportunity is specifically designed for students who need qualifying experience or service hours as part of their academic program. The Animal Cause, Inc. will work with your university to provide required documentation and verification, subject to your school's requirements.
About The Animal Cause, Inc.
The Animal Cause, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) Christian animal welfare organization that works to reform animal welfare, raise awareness, support organizations serving animals, and create sustainable social change.
Our work extends beyond individual animal rescue. We are developing systems, programs, partnerships, education, transportation, volunteer infrastructure, and other resources intended to address the conditions that allow animals to remain vulnerable in the first place.
The Animal Cause, Inc. is 100% volunteer-based. No one at TAC currently receives a salary from the organization.
Because our organization is undergoing significant infrastructure development, we are building a structured volunteer system designed to move beyond informal volunteer recruitment toward organized teams, defined responsibilities, controlled access, training, accountability, and measurable outcomes.
The Internship
Volunteer Recruiting Intern
Remote | Unpaid | Team-Based | College/University Students | Structured Internship
This is not a traditional “sit back and observe” internship.
Recruiting interns will participate in the actual development and operation of TAC's volunteer-recruitment pipeline.
You will work as part of a shared recruiting team, meaning the workload is distributed among multiple contributors rather than assigned entirely to one person.
The purpose of the team is to help TAC consistently identify, screen, onboard, support, and retain qualified volunteers and interns.
You will have the opportunity to apply coursework in areas such as:
- Human resources
- Organizational leadership
- Business administration
- Human services
- Communications
- Marketing
- Nonprofit management
- Psychology
- Sociology
- Public administration
- Organizational development
- Education
- Management
- Other related disciplines
Your degree coursework should provide the foundational knowledge. TAC provides the opportunity to apply that knowledge in a real nonprofit operating environment.
This internship is not designed to teach you an entirely new profession from scratch. We are looking for students who can apply what they are already learning.
Previous recruiting, HR, volunteer-management, nonprofit, communications, or outreach experience is helpful but is not necessarily required when the student's academic program provides relevant preparation.
What You May Work On
Depending on team assignment and demonstrated capability, Recruiting Interns may assist with:
- Developing and improving volunteer opportunity descriptions
- Maintaining recruiting pipelines
- Posting and refreshing volunteer opportunities
- Researching appropriate volunteer and internship recruiting platforms
- Identifying colleges, universities, corporations, and community organizations for outreach
- Conducting email and telephone outreach
- Screening applications using established criteria
- Conducting structured candidate interviews
- Documenting candidate information
- Recommending candidates for advancement
- Supporting volunteer onboarding
- Maintaining candidate and volunteer records
- Monitoring onboarding completion
- Supporting volunteer retention initiatives
- Identifying recruiting bottlenecks
- Evaluating recruiting results
- Developing outreach strategies
- Creating recruiting materials
- Researching volunteer-management practices
- Supporting the development of recruiting systems and procedures
- Helping maintain a consistent candidate experience
- Identifying ways to reduce volunteer turnover
- Supporting other recruiting-team projects as assigned
This is a systems-oriented internship.
We are not simply looking for people to "find volunteers."
We are building a recruiting process that can consistently move a person from:
Awareness → Application → Screening → Interview → Selection → Onboarding → Training → Contribution → Accountability → Retention → Advancement
Your work may therefore involve both people and systems.
Our Team Model
TAC is implementing a Shared Team Model.
That means you will not necessarily own an entire function by yourself.
Team members may work on different portions of the recruiting pipeline while sharing information, documentation, handoffs, and accountability.
The model is designed around the reality that students and volunteers generally have limited weekly availability.
Typical commitment:
Approximately 2–4 hours per week
Initial pilot:
30 days
Intended horizon:
At least 3 months
A successful 30-day pilot may lead to continued participation, increased responsibility, or consideration for a leadership role within the recruiting function.
Important: This Is Not a Casual Volunteer Opportunity
Please read this section before applying.
TAC is building a structured volunteer infrastructure. We are not looking for people who simply want to help occasionally when they have free time.
This opportunity requires:
- Reliable communication
- Completion of assigned work
- Respect for deadlines
- Ability to follow established procedures
- Willingness to document work
- Willingness to receive feedback
- Willingness to revise work
- Ability to work within a team
- Ability to operate remotely without constant supervision
- Respect for organizational confidentiality
- Consistent weekly participation
You do not need to have unlimited availability.
You do need to be honest about the availability you have and consistently honor the commitment you make.
If you are looking for an occasional volunteer activity, a résumé line with minimal participation, or a position where you can work completely independently without accountability, this internship is probably not a fit.
Biblical Foundation
The Animal Cause, Inc. is a Christian organization, and our operating philosophy is grounded in biblical principles.
Luke 16:10
"Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much."
We believe responsibility should be demonstrated through faithful execution—not simply claimed during an application.
1 Corinthians 14:40
"But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way."
Our recruiting system is intentionally structured. We value organization, documentation, appropriate processes, and responsible stewardship.
Proverbs 27:23
"Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds."
For an animal welfare organization, stewardship requires knowing what is happening—not merely assuming that good intentions produce good outcomes.
Colossians 3:23
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord."
We are not looking for perfection. We are looking for people who take their commitments seriously.

Applicants should demonstrate:
- Commitment to TAC's Christian values
- Interest in animal welfare and nonprofit work
- Enrollment in a relevant college/university degree program
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to communicate professionally
- Organizational ability
- Willingness to learn TAC's systems
- Ability to follow established procedures
- Ability to accept constructive feedback

Recruiting, HR, communications, outreach, nonprofit, leadership, or volunteer-management experience is beneficial.
Screening Questions
Please answer every question using only YES/NO or the requested number and send responses along with your resume to hr@animalcause.org
These questions are intentionally structured to determine whether this opportunity is compatible with your actual availability and working style.
Availability & Commitment
- Can you commit to approximately 6–10 hours per week for at least 30 consecutive days?
- Can you commit to continuing for at least 3 months if your 30-day pilot is successful?
- How many hours per week can you realistically commit to TAC?
- Can you reliably participate every week without TAC having to repeatedly remind you about your assignment?
- If you become unavailable for an assigned task, can you communicate that before the deadline rather than simply disappearing?
Remote Work & Accountability
- Have you previously completed a remote academic, employment, internship, or volunteer assignment without daily supervision?
- Can you follow written procedures without requiring someone to explain every step individually?
- Are you willing to document completed work and provide required status updates?
- Can you accept correction or revision of your work without considering it a personal criticism?
Recruiting & Team Environment
- Are you willing to work as part of a shared team rather than requiring ownership of an entire recruiting function?
- Are you willing to perform recruiting work that may include repetitive administrative tasks in addition to strategic or creative work?
- Are you willing to follow TAC's established screening, onboarding, confidentiality, and access procedures even when you personally would use a different approach?
- Would you be comfortable contacting colleges, universities, corporations, organizations, or prospective volunteers on behalf of TAC using approved communication procedures?
- Do you have prior experience with recruiting, human resources, volunteer management, outreach, communications, organizational development, or a related field?
- If YES to previous question, how many years of relevant experience do you have?
Mission & Organizational Alignment
- Are you comfortable serving with a Christian organization whose faith-based principles are part of its organizational identity?
- Are you willing to represent TAC professionally and accurately rather than making claims about the organization that have not been authorized or verified?
- Are you willing to protect confidential information involving volunteers, donors, foster homes, partner organizations, animals, internal systems, and organizational operations?
- Are you currently affiliated with another animal-welfare organization, rescue, shelter, nonprofit, or business that could create a conflict of interest with TAC?
- Are you at least 18 years old?
- Are you legally authorized to participate in this U.S.-based volunteer internship?
Commitment Check
- Are you applying primarily because you need required university internship/service/experiential hours?
- If your university requirement were completed, would you still be willing to honor any remaining commitment you made to TAC?
- Are you willing to complete a structured 30-day pilot before requesting expanded responsibility?
- Are you willing to be evaluated on reliability, completion, communication, judgment, and adherence to process—not simply enthusiasm?
What Happens After You Apply
The application process is intentionally structured.
Application → Screening → Diagnostic Interview → Conditional Acceptance → Onboarding → 30-Day Pilot → Evaluation → Continued Service / Expanded Responsibility
Not every applicant will advance.
We are deliberately designing the process so that applicants can determine whether TAC is a good fit before significant time is invested by either side.
Successful interns may eventually be considered for additional responsibilities such as:
- Recruiting Team Lead
- College Outreach Coordinator
- Corporate Outreach Coordinator
- Volunteer Pipeline Coordinator
- Volunteer Onboarding Coordinator
- Volunteer Retention Coordinator
- Recruiting Operations Coordinator
- Recruiting Systems Coordinator
Additional opportunities may become available as TAC's volunteer infrastructure develops.
Service-Hour Documentation
TAC can provide appropriate documentation for qualifying university requirements when the student's institution accepts nonprofit volunteer/internship service in this format.
Students are responsible for confirming their university's requirements before beginning.
At this time, TAC does not accept court-ordered community-service hours and does not structure this opportunity around court-ordered service.
Conflict of Interest
Because this position involves recruiting, organizational information, and volunteer-management systems, applicants must disclose relevant competing affiliations.
Applicants should not have conflicting associations with organizations or businesses whose interests materially conflict with TAC's work.
Any potential conflict should be disclosed during the application process.
Final Applicant Notice
This is an unpaid volunteer internship. It is not employment and does not guarantee future paid employment.
TAC operates through volunteers and donations.
The organization is currently building and modernizing its infrastructure. That means priorities, systems, assignments, and processes may evolve.
If you want an internship where everything is already established and you simply execute a predetermined list of tasks, this may not be the right environment.
If you want to apply your academic training while helping build a real nonprofit recruiting system from the ground up, this opportunity may be a strong fit.
Faithfulness, truthfulness, reliability, teachability, and stewardship matter more to us than impressive titles.
