The MKE Walks Program of the WI Bike Fed has a service learning or volunteer opportunity for undergraduate juniors or seniors. This position is for students who are interested in improving public health while developing their skills around non-profit brand identity and social media engagement through direct community input and testing their strategies in real-world settings. We believe that everyone in Milwaukee County deserves to feel safe while walking, biking, driving, or using public transportation. MKE Walks’ mission is to get all people walking and rolling safely throughout Milwaukee County through community building, interactive education and pedestrian advocacy.
This position will be approximately 25-40 hours for the fall semester and 2-4 hours per week. Students will be asked to select a consistent weekly shift to work on their projects and receive staff guidance at the WI Bike Fed Office (187 E Becher St.). Weekly shifts for fall 2026 are available Mondays - Thursdays between 9:30 AM - 3:00 PM. The majority of your hours will be completed during these weekly shifts; however, additional opportunities may be provided to assist with programming in community settings. Students are responsible for ensuring they meet minimum required hours for their school or program and are strongly encouraged to discuss any scheduling concerns with program staff as early as possible.
Each student will work with staff to develop and execute a social media or public messaging project related to their individual skills, interests, and experiences. The scope of duties may vary slightly, but students can expect them to include some or all of the following:
- Identify and develop methods to create and test new messaging in alignment with program goals that resonate with local Milwaukee-area audiences
- Attend MKE Walks programming and other approved community events, including community walks and youth workshops, to learn more about programmatic goals and gather community input for program slogans, social media campaigns, and print media like yard signs and billboards
- Create and evaluate 2-4 educational social media campaigns designed to drive engagement
- Present a final proposal to the MKE Walks team with recommendations and findings from your project
Preferred majors: marketing, brand ideation, graphic design, public health, sociology, communication, English, creative writing, journalism, digital design, digital media production
