Dog-Human Counselor: Help Us Keep Dogs & Their People Together

Let's talk about why we're building this program.

Because sometimes the dog isn't the problem.

Sometimes the human just doesn't understand the dog.

A dog is labeled “aggressive” when he's scared.

“Stubborn” when nobody has taught him what they're asking.

“Destructive” when he's bored, stressed or overwhelmed.

“Bad” when he's actually communicating the only way he knows how.

And eventually someone says:

“I can't do this anymore. I need to give up my dog.”

That's the moment we want to step in.

Not with judgment.

Not with, “Well, you should have trained him.”

And not immediately with a rehoming form.

With:

“Okay. Let's figure this out.”

Think of it as dog-human counseling.

We're building a program that helps people understand why their dog is behaving the way they are, how the human-dog relationship may be contributing to the problem, and what they can actually do differently.

Because sometimes changing the human's understanding changes the dog's behavior.

And sometimes?

It changes the entire relationship.

And the dog gets to stay home.

That's the win.

But sometimes rehoming really is the right answer.

And we're not going to pretend otherwise.

There are situations where, despite education, support and every reasonable effort, the best thing for everyone is finding that dog a new home.

When that happens, we want to do it responsibly and intentionally — not throw a dog onto Facebook and hope for the best.

We already have a structure we're modeling this program after, based on an organization that is successfully doing this work.

We're not trying to reinvent the wheel just for the sake of saying we did.

We have a proven model to learn from, and that organization has offered to mentor us as we build the program if we need it.

So you're not walking into a completely blank room.

You're walking into an opportunity to help us take an existing successful concept and make it Legacy Paws.

What you'll help build

You'll help develop the program that becomes the first stop for people who are struggling with their dogs and considering surrender.

And this is where it gets really interesting.

Legacy Paws is developing an archetype matching system designed to look at both sides of the relationship — the human and the dog.

Because sometimes the issue isn't that either one is “bad.”

They're just speaking completely different languages.

Our goal is to better understand the individual human, the individual dog, their personalities, needs, communication styles and compatibility — and use that information to help create better relationships and, when rehoming is necessary, better matches.

That could mean helping an owner realize:

“Holy crap. My dog isn't being difficult. I've been completely misunderstanding what he's trying to tell me.”

Or it could mean recognizing that a particular dog and particular human simply aren't the right fit — and helping both of them find a better path.

The archetype system will be one tool within the larger program, not a magic answer or replacement for professional behavior assessment.

You'll help us explore how it can be used alongside education, behavior support, resources and responsible rehoming.

You'll also help develop things like:

• Helping owners understand canine body language and communication
• Identifying misunderstandings between dogs and humans
• Helping people recognize how their own actions or expectations may be contributing to a behavior
• Creating educational tools and resources
• Connecting families with appropriate training and behavior resources
• Helping families develop realistic strategies for their specific situation
• Using our human/dog archetype matching system to help identify compatibility and potential relationship challenges
• Building relationships with trainers, veterinarians, behavior professionals and community partners
• Developing a safe and responsible rehoming process when keeping the dog truly isn't possible
• Using the matching system and other information to help identify better potential placements
• Following up with families and placements
• Tracking what we're learning so the program gets better over time
• Eventually helping build and lead a team around the program

The goal isn't simply to move dogs from one home to another.

• It's to understand why the relationship isn't working, see whether it can be repaired, and if it can't, help create a better match the next time around.

And because this is Legacy Paws...

I'm sure we'll come up with some ideas nobody else is doing yet.

That's encouraged.

Why this matters

Every dog we help stay safely with their family is a dog who never enters the rescue system.

That's huge.

Because rescue shouldn't always mean:

“Take the dog away.”

Sometimes rescue means:

“Let's help you understand each other before you give up on each other.”

That's the kind of rescue we're trying to build.

Legacy Paws is a veteran-owned 501(c)(3) dog rescue and sanctuary, but rescue is only where we begin.

We're building a Community of Kindness around dogs and people — with education, prevention, rehoming, fostering, outreach and other programs designed to address problems before they become emergencies.

Who I'm looking for

I'm looking for someone who genuinely gets this.

Someone who can look at a behavior problem and ask:

“What is the dog trying to tell us?”

But also:

“What are we humans doing that might be making this worse?”

You need empathy.

You need good judgment.

You need to be comfortable talking to people without making them feel badly for not understanding their dog.

But you also need enough backbone to tell someone when something they're doing isn't working.

You don't have to know everything.

You DO need to be willing to learn.

And you need to be someone who can take an idea, build a process around it, and eventually help other people do the same thing.

This is a leadership opportunity.

You're not coming in to simply answer emails and refer people somewhere else.

You'll help build this program.

You'll have ownership.

You'll help shape how Legacy Paws approaches dog-human relationships, behavior support and responsible rehoming.

You'll work with our leadership team and the organization we're modeling the program after.

And you'll have the opportunity to build a team as it grows.

Approximately 5–10 hours per week.

Remote-friendly, with local involvement welcome.

You don't have to live in North Carolina.

You don't have to already have every answer.

You just need to believe that sometimes the best way to save a dog...

is to save the relationship first.

Prerequisites

Required

• Experience with dogs through rescue, fostering, training, behavior, veterinary care, animal welfare or a closely related field
• Strong understanding of canine behavior and body language, or a strong willingness to learn
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Ability to communicate with people who may be frustrated, overwhelmed or considering surrender
• Strong empathy without judgment
• Good judgment regarding animal safety and welfare
• Ability to recognize when a situation requires referral to a qualified trainer, behavior professional, veterinarian or other specialist
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work independently and take initiative
• Ability to commit approximately 5–10 hours per week
• Genuine commitment to keeping dogs and people together whenever safely possible

Strongly preferred

• Experience with canine behavior or training
• Experience working with dogs displaying challenging or misunderstood behaviors
• Experience counseling or coaching people through behavior or relationship challenges
• Experience in rescue, fostering, adoption or rehoming
• Experience developing programs, educational materials or community resources
• Experience building partnerships with trainers, veterinarians or other animal professionals
• Experience leading volunteers or teams

You do NOT need

• To live in North Carolina
• To have a nonprofit degree
• To already have a complete program built
• To know everything about canine behavior

We have a successful model to learn from and an organization willing to mentor us as needed.

What we need is someone who can learn, think, communicate and build.
