Rehoming Program Lead for Legacy Paws Rescue

Project Overview
Legacy Paws Rescue is building out our Owner-Assisted Rehoming Program: a bridge program where a dog stays in its current home while we handle posting, screening guidance, and support, so that dog never has to sit in a shelter or a stranger's foster home while we find the right fit. This is shaping up to be one of the biggest things we do, right up there with our foster program, maybe bigger. We need someone to lead it.
What You'd Actually Be Doing
- Build out the operational framework and SOPs for owner-assisted rehoming, working from a process we've already outlined and modeled on an established rescue's rehoming program
- Develop the intervention step: resources and support to help an owner keep their dog if that's genuinely possible, before the process moves into actual rehoming
- Create the screening and posting workflow for owners who do need to rehome
- Stay with the family through every step of the process, not just handling logistics from a distance
- Build this program as the foundation for the Hub, our future central matching system, so it plugs in rather than getting rebuilt later
- Recruit and manage volunteers who help run rehoming cases as the program grows
- We have a rescue with dogs waiting to beta test our program
Why This Matters
I started Legacy Paws because I know what it's like to be the one nobody wants to deal with, and that's true for dogs and the people who love them both. Most rescues only get involved once a dog is already out of a home. I want us there before that, standing with a family while they're trying to figure out if they can keep their dog, and standing with them if they can't. Right now this program is still an idea and a process I sketched from another rescue's model. I need somebody who can actually build it and hold it, because it might end up being the biggest part of what we do.
How We've Prepared
- The concept and a starting process outline already exist, modeled on an established rehoming program
- The intervention-first approach is defined: help the owner keep the dog first, rehome only if that's not possible
- This program is designed to plug directly into our foster network and our future Hub, not sit apart from it
- You'd be building something core to the organization, not a side project
About Legacy Paws Rescue
Legacy Paws Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 33-2211382) founded in January 2025 by Domenica Robbins, a U.S. Air Force veteran and former psychiatric registered nurse. We're a home sanctuary, not a kennel, for dogs other rescues call too aggressive, too broken, or too much. Our mission: creating a community of kindness where healing happens on both ends of the leash. Learn more at legacypawsrescue.org.
