About Meals on Wheels Central Texas
Meals on Wheels Central Texas (MOWCTX), a nonprofit dedicated to ending senior hunger and isolation in Central Texas, is looking for friendly, tech-comfortable volunteers to serve as NeighborNav Volunteer Champions. This peer support role helps fellow volunteers feel confident using NeighborNav, MOWCTX's mobile communication and route management platform.
About the opportunity
As a NeighborNav Volunteer Champion, you'll visit volunteer pickup sites across Central Texas, answer questions, demonstrate the app in action, and serve as a trusted go-to resource in the field. You don't need to be a tech expert -- you just need to be patient, approachable, and comfortable with smartphones and mobile apps.
Champions also help improve the volunteer experience by gathering feedback from fellow volunteers and sharing it with staff. It's a great fit for anyone who enjoys peer mentorship, informal teaching, or wants hands-on experience supporting technology adoption in a community setting.
Responsibilities
- Visit volunteer pickup sites to demonstrate NeighborNav and reinforce best practices for check-ins, route use, and neighbor updates
- Answer common questions and provide encouragement and basic troubleshooting in the field
- Review, test, or help improve training materials such as quick tips, guides, or FAQs
- Gather feedback from volunteers and share insights with staff to support continuous improvement
- Serve as a positive ambassador for NeighborNav and for MOWCTX
- Coordinate with staff on site visits, observations, and follow-up support as needed
Requirements
- Comfortable using smartphones and mobile apps; willingness to learn new technology
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills; able to teach and support others patiently
- Reliable, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently in the field
- Reliable transportation to travel to volunteer pickup sites
- Access to a reliable smartphone and computer; comfortable communicating via email or Microsoft Teams
- Completed volunteer application and valid government ID
- No formal tech certification required
Time commitment
- Flexible schedule coordinated with staff during volunteer pickup hours at select sites
- Time commitment varies based on site needs and volunteer traffic
- Ideal commitment of 3-6 months to build familiarity with NeighborNav and support platform adoption
- Focus may be on 1 site or multiple sites depending on need; continued service possible beyond initial commitment
Location
Hybrid role. In-person at volunteer pickup sites, community hubs, or scheduled trainings. Remote for reviewing training materials and coordinating with staff. Occasional office or team meeting visits may be requested.
Development opportunities
- Build experience supporting and training peers in a community-based environment
- Develop confidence leading one-on-one and small-group technology trainings
- Practice communication, mentorship, and informal leadership skills
- Gain insight into how technology supports volunteer operations and service delivery
- Contribute directly to improving the volunteer experience and program effectiveness
