Help make history, science, and technology engaging for young learners at the Western Museum of Mining & Industry.
Museum Education Volunteers support field trips, STEAM camps, classroom activities, and other educational programs. During larger field trips, students divide into smaller groups and rotate through activities. Education Volunteers lead or assist with one of these rotations, helping every group receive an engaging and organized experience.
What you will do
- Lead or assist with educational activities and field-trip rotations.
- Welcome student groups and help them move between activities.
- Explain program content using instructions and materials provided by museum staff.
- Assist with classroom-based museum programs.
- Support STEAM camps and youth activities.
- Prepare program materials, supplies, and activity spaces.
- Help maintain a safe, organized, and welcoming learning environment.
- Assist museum education staff with other program needs.
Who we are looking for
- Adults age 18 or older who can pass a background check.
- Dependable volunteers who enjoy working with children and youth.
- People who are comfortable speaking to groups, giving instructions, and supporting hands-on activities.
- Volunteers who can follow program plans and youth-safety procedures.
Teaching, classroom, museum, camp, or youth-program experience is helpful but not required. Most of our Education Volunteers are not professional teachers. Training will be provided.
Schedule
Education Volunteers serve as programs are scheduled, primarily on weekday mornings and afternoons. Most opportunities take place from approximately 10:00 AM to noon or 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
The museum emails volunteers about upcoming programs. Volunteers may accept opportunities based on their availability. There is no fixed weekly commitment.

The Western Museum of Mining & Industry preserves and interprets the rich mining history of Colorado and the American West. Open since 1970, the museum connects visitors with the people, technology, and industries that helped shape the region.
Located on a 27-acre campus in Colorado Springs, WMMI features a 12,200-square-foot exhibit hall, working historic machinery, a model mining drift, gold-panning stations, historic buildings, educational programs, guided tours, and community events. Through interactive experiences and preservation, WMMI brings Western mining and industrial history to life for visitors of all ages.
